Introduction to Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising

What is pay per click?

In case PPC advertising is new to you, here’s a brief explanation. Millions of searches are made on the Web every day, encompassing every conceivable kind of product and service.

The results of these searches appear in the free listing, occupying most of the search engine results page, and in smaller areas at the side, top or bottom of the page, sometimes known as “sponsored ads”. It is very difficult indeed to get a web site to the top of the free listings, which is the reason for the existence of pay per click advertising. These smaller areas are reserved for PPC advertisers.

Pay per click advertisers bid an amount of money for position among the sponsored ads. The higher your bid is, the higher your ad’s position will be. You pay only when a searcher clicks on your ad, and goes to your “landing page”. This is the page you want your visitors to see first.
The amount you pay is not necessarily the amount of your bid; it is slightly more than that of the next lower bid. It may sound simple, but you can easily lose a lot of money if all the elements of the science of pay per click management are not in place. The aim of every PPC advertiser is to achieve the best position for the lowest cost. Constant tweaking is required to maintain this balancing act.

As just a couple of examples, if you want to outdo your competitors in your local area, you can gain an edge over them very cheaply with a Google AdWords PPC campaign, simply because you won’t be competing with the entire world. Similarly, your ad would have a greater chance of success with “Cobra 427 for sale” than with “Cars for sale”. In short, the more narrow your target market is, the easier, and therefore cheaper, it is to reach them.

Google adwords ads or pay per click advertising must have caused more joy and gloom throughout the internet marketing world than just about anything else. The ‘blues’ are as the result of not organising a proper pay per click management strategy.

Market research,organising a list of relevant keywords, writing the ads and getting them uploaded to the web requires a lot of effort. If you do not have the right bidding plan in place it’s at this point that you could begin to punch a large hole in the household finances.

So your ads are on display, but in what position and are you paying too much per click ?

I should make it clear that the following pay per click strategy is my own and I follow it every day. It works for me but I cannot say for certain that it will work for you in your market or that other strategies promoted by other marketers are not as good or better.

To begin with I would have around 150 ad groups in my ppc campaign, there would be one keyword in every group in the three formats available. With two ads, you keep an eye on the ‘click through rate’ of them both so that you can replace the poorest performing one. Your keyword must be the headline of your ad and where it is more than twenty five characters long it will be substituted with a suitable phrase you have ready. I referred to the three versions of the keyword, these are “broad”, [exact] and broad - which has no embellishments.

My opening bid is 2% of the profit I will generate from a sale - what does that mean ? Lets take a situation where my profit on a sale is $30, two per cent of that is sixty cents - my first bid.

In your adwords account, locate and click on ‘edit campaign settings’. At the bottom of this page you have the option to chose the countries where you want your ad to appear. Switch off the ‘content’ option, put the ads on ‘rotate’ and set your daily budget. Only you can decide how much this will be but please remember to multiply the amount you choose by thirty and be certain that you can easily afford that per month.

For ads to appear ‘above the fold’ they need to be in positions 1 to 5 usually, but I advise you not to aim for the top two spots, you will pay less and still get plenty of clicks in 3rd, 4th and 5th place. The techniques I use to get my ads in the right positions and at the right cost will be the subject of my next article.

Making good money by advertising using Google Adwords ads is possible but only with the right per per click management strategy.

Just here recently, the Google Adsense program was the darling of the Internet Marketing World. Newbies jumped on board the Adsense bandwagon believing they would make money fast and be holding up big checks like Shoemoney. The lack of a focused website is one of the biggest reasons Webmasters don’t make bank with Adsense.

For Adsense to show your visitors the highest paying ads, your site has to be very targeted to a keyword. Take this for example, if you have articles on a site talking about everything from how green the grass is today to how sloppy your kids teacher dressed, Adsense is not going to give you the highest paying ads. What’s more, the ones you do get probably won’t be targeted to your audience because the Adsense bot is having an impossible time trying to figure out what your website is about.

You can start taking notes now. For example, let’s say you started a blog about chicken wings. You have no articles on your site other than those about Chicken Wings. You have articles about Hot Wings, Barbecue Chicken Wings, Wing Sauce Recipes, How to cook Chicken Wings, etc. Now if you’ve done your on-page SEO properly, the Adsense bot will know that you site is all about Chicken Wings. If an advertiser is paying $2.00 per click to advertise their Chicken Wing product, your site will get that high paying ad. Plus, when you have visitors to your site, they’re going to click on those Adsense ads if they want more information about chicken wings.

Another funny statement is when a noob says he’s getting a steady stream of traffic from Stumble Upon or Digg, but he isn’t getting any clicks? It’s no secret to most of us that Social Traffic doesnt convert. Traffic from Social Sites are just reading about crap while they should be working. They don’t click ads people!

Google traffic is what drives Adsense clicks. If your website is niche focused and you have your site ranking well for its keywords, then when search engine traffic from Google arrives, they’ll be clicking ads. They’re searching for information and they found it on your site. Your site has a bunch of Adsense ads about what they’re looking for. They are there to find information and they will click ads!

Another trick is to have some vague or long drawn out post. If someone is looking for a recipe on Chicken Wings with Cheese Fritters and you have an article by the same name, they’ll be reading that article. But if that article is really long and boring and says very little about Chicken Wings with Cheese Fritters, they’ll get bored and start looking around your site. That’s when they’ll see an Adsense block with an ad for a sure fire, can’t miss Chicken Wing with Cheese Fritter recipe and click on it. You don’t want to solve their problems, you want them to see an ad that they believe will solve their problem so they will click on it!

Okay, that’s enough for now. I’ll let you think about what I just said. Meanwhile, go look at your site and see where you can improve it. Get it focused on one niche. Having a website over too many topics is what gets you those nickel clicks!

Optimize Your Google Adwords Ads and Increase Conversions

Setting up and working with your Google Adwords campaign isn’t a one-time project, and many people who just set up their initial campaign and then ‘wait’for results fail to make use of the true potential behind the Google Adwords system.

Many experts and professionals in this area have already mastered the techniques, which is why it is without a doubt that every ad published becomes a hit; however, making an ad with the best combination of keywords and copy do not neccessarily require similar expertise from you but it calls for understanding the campaign’s optimization.

How to Write an Attention-Grabbing PPC Ad

Pay per click is perhaps the best advertising medium available for Internet-based businesses and for small businesses in general. It allows them to carefully cut the advertising fat by choosing exactly what they will pay for and what they won’t.

They not only get to select the keywords they want to bid on, but they only pay when someone actually clicks through one of those ads and is directed to their site. This is a far cry from paying for advertising on a billboard, which might generate a lot of “impressions,” but few actions.

Unfortunately, though, advertising through PPC programs, such as Google’s Adwords, is no piece of cake – despite what many gurus may tell you during a sales pitch. Writing an ad that commands a high ROI can be broken down into the following steps:

Pick the right keywords for the ad. While this seems like it has nothing to do with writing the ad, it actually is the first and most important step. If you want your ad to have a high click through rate, it must be narrowly focused around a set of keyphrases that all have the same root keyword in common. This will allow you to repeat that root keyword 1-3 times throughout the ad. Whenever someone searches for one of those keywords and your ad pops up, the root will appear in bold, since it is part of the keyword they searched for. This will make it stick out clearly, drawing them to click on it.

Avoid fancy stuff in the headline. Here, all you want is a simple description of the product or service offered: “Grand Piano for Sale.” Also, remember to include that root keyword in the headline to make it stick out more. People need to immediately see whether or not your ad is relevant. And the best way to communicate that is to say exactly what you’re selling.

Communicate the best feature associated with your product on the first line of your ad (below the headline) or clarify exactly what is you are selling. For example, in the “grand piano” ad above, you could ad something like the following: “Choose Between 700 Grand Pianos” or “Pay Only $500 for Your Grand Piano.”

Last, in your second line, communicate a benefit associated with your product. Here, rather than saying something physical about your store or product, you will explain what the product can do for the person. The product might “Save You Hundreds” or “Teach You How to Make Millions.” Make sure it is compelling and relevant. Ask yourself (and possibly a friend) whether or not this is something that would make you take action.

And there you have it: a 4-step blueprint for creating an “attention-grabbing” PPC advertisement. Once you put your first ad up and allow it to rotate, you will then want to start testing competing ads.

The best way to do this is to alter one part of the ad at a time. For instance, start off by altering your headline until you get a better CTR. After that, work on your first line – and so on. After a few weeks of working out changes, you should have an effective, powerful ad.

How to write for Adsense content

adsense1This article is part of an ongoing project of mine. Writing articles that will generate search traffic and ad clicks.

The methods I will attempt to outline is for long tailed search phrases, like the ones explained in that epic read.

Writing Adsense content is tricky. Maybe you will write an article about your experience shopping for car insurance in Tampa, FL. There is a good chance of seeing a few clicks a month for people searching for car insurance in tampa fl. What else can you write about? a lot. Current news & trending topics is hot, reviews of pop culture, products, places, events there is a lot of topics you can cover. Just remember this formula traffic = popularity – competition. Finding a happy medium is probably the hardest part.

Information sells, and if you solve someone’s problem or provide an answer to a question you are far more likely to get a click out of the deal. Have you ever searched diligently only to not find exactly what you are looking for? Why not make it easier for the next searcher to find that information. How to guides are very popular and fun to write.

You might even want to write about your experience with a certain local company. Did they go out of their way to make you a valued customer? Then by all means the world needs to know, did they leave you hanging? Rant away!

Be descriptive, relevant, repeat the keyword phrases in the Title, Descrition, Content and H1 tags on your blog.

Write hundreds of articles and you will see traffic grow in proportion. After all blogging is supposed to be about what is happening in your life. Share the right details, the one’s that people are searching the net for.

I do hope everyone is at least writing about events and what not in the local community. Even if your only writing 200 word editorials and linking to the article you are writing about. Keep blogging! Not every post needs to be a master’s thesis.

My goal is to blog 3-4 times per day for the next 3 months. Then I will have hundreds of articles and with any luck see a fair amount of organic traffic. Can I write about enough searchable content to generate 1000 visitors a day? I want to know!

After some time you will start to see what works and what does not. You will see how people find your blog organically. Reach out to other bloggers, befriend them, earn their attention. Complement others works, read other blogger’s articles, comment tastefully, pickup back links. Rinse, repeat.

Use Google Analytics, learn it well, it will tell you everything about your traffic. Who is sending what, organic, referral, direct traffic. How long the visitor is on site. It reported to me that someone reached my site searching for the keywords ‘naked twitter man’, on more than one occasion. Are you asking yourself the same question I thought? Who searches for that? Apparently a few people have.

In a rather short amount of time I have been getting hits to my blog based on some of these profitable keywords, all of them have been long tailed searches. Long tailed searches are highly targeted. Now I just have to optimize the Adsense Placements, and hope for the best.

Maybe you will discover that I have no clue what I am talking about. Maybe not.

The Most Profitable Adsense Keywords

Targeting high paying keywords is crucial to succeed in making money with Adsense. Not all keywords are the same. Different keywords pay different amounts. Different keywords in different niche markets also pay differently. If your blog is not targeting the “profitable” keywords you will probably be earning less money per Adsense click than you should be. Typically you would see %50 of the number given above credited to your Adsense account. There are ways to do this effectively, blogging and targeting keywords seems to be pretty popular, and not too difficult to understand. Reports are all over the internet how so and so makes $15,000 a month in Adsense revenue. Really? I want to find out if this is true and share this with my readers.

The most important part of the game is “relevancy”. Don’t add content pages about irrelevant keywords to your blog just because they are high paying. Instead look for high paying keywords targeted around the theme of your site.

Also Keep in mind we are going to try for the long tail stuff. Using a combination of the keywords in this list combined with keywords that you would normally find on your blog.

Chpater 3 – The Important Relationship Between AdSense and AdWords

Before continuing further in the AdSense discussion it is important to understand the relationship between Goodle AdSense and Google AdWords. When it comes to pay-per-click advertising AdWords is hands down the Internet leader.

AdWords are those text advertisements that appear down the right hand-side of a Google search page. The ads are directly related to the keywords you use in your Google search. Advertisers are assured that there advertisements are shown to individuals who already have an interest in their product. AdWords is an amazingly powerful and effective advertising platform on the Internet as businesses are able to advertise in a highly targeted manner.

For example, let’s assume you sell widgets. You can set up your AdWords campaign to only to be shown when people type the word “widgets” in the Google search form. Your ad is shown to a person who has some form of interest in widgets. If someone types in “cars” then your ad will not be shown.

Obviously Google wishes to make a profit from AdWords so when an individual clicks on one of these ads Google charges the advertiser for the click. There is no set charge, rather advertisers bid for keywords and ad position. The advantage to advertisers is that their money is not wasted on non-interested parties clicking on their ads. With the AdWords system Google has enabled small businesses to compete in the Internet marketplace without breaking the bank.

AdSense was a follow-up program to AdWords, allowing website owners to get a piece of the advertising pie. As an extension of AdWords, AdSense allows website owners to place AdWords ads on their web pages. The difference regarding which ads are displayed is not determined by search keywords, but rather by page content. As an AdSense member, Google gives you a piece of JavaScript to paste in the code of your web page. That’s it. This JavaScript enables Google to decide which ads are most appropriate to show on your web page and tracks ad performance as well.

Google’s advanced content recognition technology is so intuitive that it determines which country an Internet surfer is from, displaying ads accordingly. For example if your website sells widgets, Internet surfers in the USA would see advertisements from USA widget retailers and British Internet surfers would see advertisements from British widget retailers. When someone clicks on one these of ads from your website the advertiser is charged a fee and you receive a portion.

Google has established safeguards preventing website owners from clicking on their ads to generate income. They can determine if someone is committing fraud and will ban such individuals from AdSense forever. Participating in this fraudulent behavior is stealing and hurts the industry in general. When individuals are caught and banned it is a positive for the rest.

It is advised that you open an AdWords account in addition to your AdSense account. This will become clearer as we address future AdSense subjects. Like AdSense, AdWords is free to join.

This was a basic presentation of how AdSense and AdWords are related. It is important to study this relationship further to succeed in generating and maximizing revenue from AdSense. Many website owners simply join AdSense, insert the code, expecting the dollars to flow. When reality and expectation don’t meet, the website owner becomes disillusioned and abandons AdSense. Like most things in life, success takes work and perseverance. If you’re expecting quick money you need to look elsewhere. However, if you do your homework and grasp these fundamental concepts you’re on your way to doing well.

My Adsense earnings have literally doubled over the past 2 months, and even though it still doesn’t add up to all that much, I can actually see what is working and why now, and build up on that knowledge. And I would like to share my insights with you! But please excuse if it sometimes sounds a bit funny - this is just me talking to you like I was sitting opposite you. I really am not that good in having everything read polished and professional, sorry! :)

When it comes to making money with Adsense, it seems that the opinions in the Internet Marketing community are a bit split. Some say that Adsense is a great money earner, others believe that all the talk about it is B**S** and you should stick to “more solid” forms of making money online.

I admit, at the beginning of my IM career, when I had my first site up and running with lots of Adsense ads plastered around its webpages (http://www.mybeachdecor.com), I started to think that Adsense was not what it was made out to be - because I had literally no clicks and therefore no income. So - this clearly didn’t work very well!

Making Money With Adsense

It has pretty much taken me the last year and a bit of learning, trying, asking questions etc. to find out that making good money with Adsense is indeed possible, and what you have to do to make it work. I’m not surprised now that so many Newbie Internet Marketers give up on it because they want to see fast results, and they are just not getting them. How should anybody at the beginning know what it takes to be successful with Adsense?!?

So here is a list of points I have discovered that can make a huge difference to your Adsense earnings:

  • Which topic/niche your website/webpage is centered around. This can determine whether you get cents or dollars per click - literally! As Google will display ads relevant to your sites or pages content, if you choose your niche or topic wisely, it will pay off. For example, if you are in a highly competitive niche like Internet Marketing (my blog here belongs to this category), the advertisers who’s ads are displayed on your site will usually have to pay a higher price for their advertising than advertisers in a much smaller niche, like gecko wall art (just using my sites as example) - all because of the higher competition. Of course it doesn’t mean that all the clicks you receive will always result in higher Adsense earnings, but in general these ads will make you more money than ads in less competitive niche markets.

What I like to do is go to Google’s External Keyword Tool and check some numbers; I type in keywords that are relevant to the niche I plan to build a website for, and then check the “Estimated Avg. CPC” number (estimated average cost per click; note it says estimated and average). Check the two examples; one is for the search term “beach decor”, and the other for “Adsense”. See the difference?? Mind you, Adsense is a bit out of the norm. But even niches with keywords getting even $2 or thereabouts for clicks can well be worth it! So needless to tell you that my beach decor site is usually making me a lot less per click than, for example, this blog you are reading.

  • Where your ads are placed. People do not have a lot of patience any more. When they arrive at your site they will quickly scan the content and then decide whether they stay or go. It has been proven that Adsense Advertising blocks that are placed above the fold (that’s what people can see on their computer before they start scrolling) are doing much better than the ones below. Simply because often people don’t even scroll down the page so the ads wouldn’t be visible. So place at least one ad unit above the fold. Also, try to blend the units within the content.
