1. Step 1

   First you want to choose a topic for your article. Many writers promoting keywords say to look at keyword lists to find topics to write about, however you will probably end up writing about things you are not interested in or do not have real knowledge of. Therefore, I think you first want to think about the topic and then maximize that topic rather then choosing topics solely based on the keyword.

2. Step 2

   Now that you have chosen your topic, you want to determine the key word of the topic. For example, if you wanted to write about how to quit smoking, smoking would be the keyword. From there, you want to generate a list of synonyms or other ways to say the same thing. You can also use a keyword tool to help you come up with other ways to say your topic.

3. Step 3

   Go to a page that allows you to analyze keywords. Google has a free tool that is part of Adwords (the link is in resources). Go the the keyword tool and enter your topic. A list will be generated of potential keywords and their search volume.

4. Step 4

   At the top of this list there will be a drop down menu that says "Choose Columns to Display." You want use that to add the Estimated Cost Per Click CPC" column. This will show you how much an advertise has to pay for those keywords. The higher the amount the more the advertisement is worth and the more money you will make when someone clicks on the ad.

5. Step 5

   Analyze the list to find a balance of a high paying keyword and a high search volume. It is important to balance both because you want to choose topics that a lot of people look for to make sure you have traffic.

6. Step 6

   Go back to the list you made in step 2 and try some of the other words you came up with. Choose the one that has the highest potential for earning money and generating traffic.
